Well-known as the key players in how a woman’s body functions and affects the health of a woman, the female sex hormones are the chemical messengers that the endocrine glands produce and release into the bloodstream.
The different types of female sex hormones are:
- Estrogen: The most well-known sex hormone produced in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and fatty tissue is responsible for performing body functions like ovulation, menstruation, breast development, cartilage density, etc.
- Progesterone: Playing an important role in the menstrual cycle just like estrogen, progesterone is produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and placenta. It helps stabilize the menstrual cycle and prepares the uterus for pregnancy.
- Testosterone: Present in lower amounts in females’ ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It contributes to sex drive, bone mass, production of red blood cells, etc.
- Growth hormone: Referred to by the initials HGH, the growth hormones are produced by the pituitary gland. It is associated with growth and development, along with cell growth, cell regeneration, and cell reproduction.
- Cortisol: Known as a steroid hormone, cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands and is responsible for keeping the body healthy and energetic. It also helps regulate metabolism, blood pressure, and others.
